Even if any kind of immediate reflex to the reality external to art is missing in his abstract, autonomous pictorial worlds, Bechtold in no way views them as detached from man and his reality of life or from his own existence. On the contrary: “I do not write about myself – I paint about myself. (…) Man stands at the center of my work – and he lives, like nature, in contrasts, tensions, and disturbances. We are existentially involved in the interplay of ordered chaos and chaotic order. My paintings are an attempt to translate this complex infathomability into artistic reality.” (Christoph Zuschlag)
